Google Translation (not bad)

Just browsing over the centre of Sydney (Australia) with Google Maps and came across this German description of The Domain, a large public grassed area for family walks. Many years ago it was used as a “soapbox” corner where you could speak out to the crowds on any topic.

The Domain, Sydney

I then Googled for the first few words of the description: “The Domain ist eine große Freifläche in der Nähe des Hyde Parks.” The second entry pointed me to a page on the cosmotourist.de site (see the last line of the pop-up description on the map). Google also offered to [ Translate this page ] so I tried that.

Here is the result:

The Domain is a large open space in the vicinity of Hyde Park. It forms in about an imaginary extension of the Royal Botanic Garden, and is mainly used for large outdoor events. Is not necessarily the perfect lawn, because it’s just a little large and uncomfortable, but to play football, Frisbee toss or throw boomerang practice is enough room. And you are quite close to Kings Cross, the backpacker and entertainment hotbed of Sydney.

Not sure about the “boomerang practice”, but the “backpacker” reference is correct. Love the “hotbed”.
